Building strong communities, one new home at a time.

BY SHAUNNA BURHOP / ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED IN THE NOVEMBER 2022 EDITION OF THE BURHOP GROUP NEWSLETTER.

We had heard others talk about Habitat for Humanity but never had an opportunity to participate until recently. The experience was gratifying beyond our expectations! With a team of co-workers, Tracy Bongiorno and I worked on one of the last of 35 homes to be completed by Habitat Chicago in the West Pullman neighborhood.

We were on the “framing” team, working on the second level to construct walls and window frames. Even with our very basic skill of hammering nails, we were able to contribute and collaborate with others to make great progress!

But the work goes beyond the building. We were so impressed by the skills and dedication of the Habitat staff, not only taking care to guide us and make sure the construction was rock solid, but also following through with a program that teaches homeowners how to maintain their new home and manage the related finances as well.

While we’re definitely most comfortable helping clients buy or stage and sell homes, (as opposed to swinging hammers!) we would not hesitate to volunteer again. Check out my Instagram video highlights of the day here—and contact me if you want to learn more about HFH or how to help participate in a future build. It’s an experience you won’t forget!
